Residencies and Fellowships
Graduate Medical Education at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine provides physicians with advanced clinical training designed to prepare them for successful careers in medicine. Through a broad range of accredited residency and fellowship programs, residents and fellows gain hands-on experience while developing the clinical knowledge, professional skills and confidence needed for independent practice. Marshall’s programs also reflect a strong commitment to serving the unique health care needs of West Virginia and the Appalachian region.
Residents can pursue training across numerous specialties, including anesthesiology, family medicine, internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery, as well as rural-focused programs in general surgery, internal medicine and psychiatry. Fellowship opportunities provide additional specialized training in areas such as cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, nephrology, pulmonary critical care, sports medicine, geriatrics and pediatric subspecialties. Together, these programs offer physicians opportunities to build expertise while caring for diverse patient populations in a collaborative academic and clinical environment.
Marshall is committed to supporting residents and fellows throughout every stage of their training. The Office of Graduate Medical Education provides resources for orientation, professional development, research and scholarly activity, quality improvement and patient safety, faculty development and resident well-being. Trainees also have access to counseling and wellness resources, educational tools and professional organizations that support their development.
